South Monmouth Regional Sewerage Authority ("SMRSA") recently completed infrastructure improvements that are being financed with approximately $877,986 in loans from the NJ Water Bank, a low-rate funding program jointly administered by the DEP and the New Jersey Infrastructure Bank. Total savings for this project are estimated at $181,778 over the 20-year term of the loan or 21% of the project cost, in comparison to SMRSA financing the project on its own. This project also created an estimated 11 direct construction jobs.
SMRSA's Brielle and Glimmer Glass pump stations were constructed in the late 1970's and in need of improvements to increase their reliability and performance. The project upgrades addressed failing mechanical equipment, corroded pipes, and deteriorating infrastructure at each pump station.
The work included the implementation of a bypass pumping system and shutdown of the original sewage pumps and wet wells. The concrete diversion walls, floors and flow channels within the wet wells were demolished and stainless steel and concrete support systems were installed. Additional work included cleaning and repairing all interior concrete and metal surfaces and the installation of an epoxy coating system on all wet well surfaces.
Frank A. Garruzzo, Mayor of Brielle Borough commended the authority for upgrading the pump stations. "These improvements are vital to maintaining the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Borrowing from the Water Bank saved money that the SMRSA will pass on to its rate payers. It's a project that fulfills operational efficiency with financial intelligence."
This project was designed by Mott MacDonald and constructed by MBE Mark III Electric.
