The City of Perth Amboy recently closed on a $7 million loan from the NJ Water Bank to modernize its sewer system, which is over 125 years old. Many of the sewer mains, constructed from brick, are prone to collapse, leading to backups, sewer surges into residents' basements, and disruptions to traffic flow. When bricks and soil fall into the mains, they reduce capacity, exacerbating overflows. The cleaning and lining of these aging sewer mains will restore and even enhance their original functionality. The low-friction linings will improve flow efficiency, increase cleaning velocity, and expand storage capacity, ultimately reducing overflows. Additionally, brick manholes, which are also deteriorating and prone to caving in, will be rehabilitated.
This project is a critical step toward meeting the requirements of the City's Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) permit, which mandates reducing discharges to no more than four per year or capturing at least 85% of the flow. By completing these upgrades, Perth Amboy will achieve compliance with the Clean Water Act, improving environmental quality and community well-being.
