FLOOD MITIGATION FACILITIES PHASE 3

The Joint Meeting of Essex and Union Counties (JMEUC) recently closed on a loan with the NJ Water Bank to reduce impacts caused by natural disasters like Superstorm Sandy and to avoid loss of wastewater service. The project will promote resiliency and minimize potential service interruptions. The JMEUC proposes to protect public health and natural resources by minimizing the release of untreated sewage into the environment.

Specifically, the project includes the construction of reinforced concrete flood protection walls around the main treatment plant site. Five storm sewer isolation chambers with sluice gates and electric actuators will be constructed, and four flood protection swing gates will be installed. The existing guard house will be demolished and a new one constructed. A new emergency access roadway will be constructed, and various roadways will be realigned and repaved including associated grading and site restoration.

Summit City: $4,735,000

Union Township: $10,030,000

West Orange Township: $6,405,000
