The Franklin Township Sewerage Authority (FTSA) recently closed on a $7,040,000 loan with the New Jersey Water Bank to rehabilitate the Marcy Street Sanitary Sewer. The FTSA conducted closed circuit television (CCTV) inspection of the sewerage and determined that a significant portion of the laterals were made up of Orangeburg pipe and showed substantial deterioration. Orangeburg piping was popular during war times when iron and steel, commonly used for pipes, were in short supply due to their deployment in military efforts. Orangeburg pipes were expected to last for at least 50 years, but in most case, needed frequent repair or total replacement after 30 years. The mainline piping around Marcy Street showed signs of deterioration with sections containing dips that were retaining wastewater. The proposed project will involve the cleaning and CCTV inspection of approximately 13,310 feet of existing sewer pipe, gravity sewer and lateral replacement, cured in place pipe (CIPP) lining, excavated spot repairs, manhole rehabilitation, and milling/paving of the roadways. These changes will significantly improve the structural integrity of the sewerage system and reduce extraneous flows.
