Lakewood Township MUA ("LTMUA") recently closed on a $12,060,4218 loan with the NJ Water Bank to address excessive levels of PFOS. This group of chemicals is commonly used in a wide range of industrial processes and can penetrate the water supply, affecting drinking water quality. This project consists of the construction of two Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filter facilities at the LTMUA treatment plant. Although elevated levels of PFOS were recently discovered in LTMUA's source water, they did not exceed the recently enacted Maximum Contaminant levels (MCLs) for these compounds. The LTMUA proposes to construct removal facilities to protect against subsequent increases which may cause MCL exceedance in the future if not treated.
