NJ American Water recently closed on a $24,103,961 loan with the NJ Water Bank to upgrade the existing Swimming River Water Treatment Plant (SRWTP). The project includes the addition of a new one-million gallon in-ground concrete clearwell for the final stage in the system, following the filtration and disinfection stages. The filtered water is held in the storage basin to allow the disinfectant to inactivate any remaining pathogens. The new clearwell will provide additional disinfection contact time and is adequately sized to provide redundancy if the existing clearwell was to be out of service for maintenance.
A High Service Pump Station (HSPS), will be installed to enable NJAWC to decommission the existing aged and deteriorated Newman Springs Gravity Line (NSGL). The NSGL is approximately 100 years old, is situated in the tidal marsh area of the downstream portions of Swimming River and supported on timber piles. The HSPS will include three new vertical turbine distributive pumps. Other components include an electrical service and power distribution building and a standby power generation unit to replace existing standby power systems, as well as other improvements.
